Along with Ponniyin Selvan, this is widely considered as one of the greatest novels ever written in Tamil. Set in 7th-century, the novel created interest in Tamil history. Honour, love and friendship are the main themes that run through the course of the novel. It is also the previous episodic of Parthiban Kanavu also written by Kalki.
